Alkali Hot Springs Tonopah Nevada…

Northern Nevada, at least the portion that I went through heading up towards Oregon, basically consisted of miles and miles of straight highway through long flat stretches of desert with mountains on the rim.  I found this interesting place listed on one of my campsite apps that I wanted to check out and it was a nice diversion.  I mentioned it in a previous post, it’s called Alkali Hot Springs in Tonopah NV…

I drove about 5 miles back a side road from the main highway to get there, and although I didn’t stay for the night, I did get to explore and to snap a few pictures while I was there.  This place wasn’t marked with signage and I almost passed it up, but once I pulled off I found it to be intriguing.  There is a hot spring on the property and the owners have it piped down the hill and it flows into a series of small pools on the property.  One pool has been setup for people to get in and sit down to enjoy the hot spring water.  It was nicely fabricated with native stone for the seats, it had four posts around the pool and a blanket and clothespins available to create privacy if you were bathing nude…

Beside the bathing pool is another small pool and the messages written on the posts said that the larger pipe which fed this pool has higher temperature water so you could move the pipe to the bathing pool for hotter water.  The spring water that was constantly flowing also runs a little further down the hill to a large pool, but no swimming was allowed in the large pool…

The soaking pool water had a lot of algae growing inside and on top of the water, which you can see in the pics, but I would assume that if I had moved the higher temperature water pipe over that it may have cleared up, but I wasn’t staying that long so I didn’t partake…

Up on the hill was a small deserted two-story building that I also explored.  The floor of the building had been pushed up from below about a foot or two right in the center which appears to have been the reason it was abandoned…

On my way back out to the highway I encountered some wild burros off the side of the road.  I managed to step out of the driver’s door to snap some pics before they got too nervous, they were very watchful to see what I was up to and ready to leave if they felt threatened…

I left here and headed on northward towards my long term destination, Portland Oregon…
