I have to say that as I made my way north
into Oregon, I became immediately enamored with the landscape and overall
beauty of this land. My favorite state
thus far, hands down…
Maybe this is something you already knew,
but I didn’t, in Oregon there are no self-service gas stations, they have
attendants who pump your gas for you and the gas prices were fairly cheap
too. One attendant in Portland told me
that she just turned 60 years old and it’s been that way as long as she can remember. It was a bit of a culture shift for me, but
this seems to be the way Oregon is wired as I have found out as I meet and talk
to more of the locals. They’re a
reserved lot, very practical in their speech and habits, but I found it very
comforting. The landscape is largely
wild and untouched, which I love, and it seems that they just don’t put on
airs, which I like too. The first
attendant I met just inside the Oregon border was really nice and I asked him
if he knew of a boon-docking place nearby where I might spend the night. He mentioned a gas station a few miles up the
road that didn’t mind people camping overnight.
As I headed north I found this small city park that was right off the
highway and allowed overnight parking and since I would rather stay in a park
than in a parking lot, I decided to check it out…
Hagelstein County Park, this is a beautiful
little place as you can see from the pictures below. There were probably 8-10 campers already
settled in for the night when I arrived, some of them had nice pull trailers,
another was in a converted school bus, and there were several people in cars
and vans as well. It had a public
restroom and trash options, and you can actually stay there for up to 14 days. That’s really unusual for a county park, but
again this is Oregon…
I just stayed the one night there, and it’s
right off the highway so there is some road noise, but it wasn’t very bad at
all and the variety of little manmade streams, vegetation, and ponds made this
a really relaxing area to camp for the night…
Upper Klamath Lake is just on the other
side of the road from the county park. I
snapped a few photos from the road as I headed north…
Thanks for stopping by...
